International Yoga Day Celebrations

Join the YogaTherapies team for a special event marking the annual celebration of International Yoga Day.

Yoga means many things to many people, but the axiom of community and of a shift towards unity is always key.

On Friday 21st June Chris and members of the YogaTherapies teaching team will be leading a special 90minute session, accompanied by live musicians and wrapped up with an extra indulgent relaxation focused on honouring the roots of yoga and the roots of our community.

After our practice the amazing Ellie is preparing a culinary treat for you, with food, drinks and some more music to spend some time in the good company of your fellow yogis!

Please book tickets both for the yoga and the social if you will be attending both so that we can cater accordingly.

"Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in well being. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day."

— Narendra Modi

Please note, classes at our Gosfroth & City Centre studios will not be running on this evening so that you can all come join us in Heaton!

Somatics, Sequencing & The Spine. Restorative Practices for Healthy Backs.

  • The Studio, The YogaTherapies Studio (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Back pain is one of the most familiar reasons that people seek out Yoga classes and a persistent struggle for many.  When practiced with the proper technique and awareness yoga can be an incredibly effective and transformative tool to both relieve acute back pain and further begin to address the underlying imbalances that lead to the development of chronic back pain. Better yet, Yoga can act as a preventative tool, maintaining the health and fluidity of the spine so those niggles never set in!

This weekend is a deeply restorative exploration of the spine, its form and its function. Expect a practical, applicable and experiential workshop that gives you both the feel and the theory covering;

Gravity and Ground Force; the evolution, form and function of the spine.

What is neutral; the lumbosacral complex and the pelvic floor.

Putting a spring in your step; gait mechanics and why they matter for therapeutic yoga.

Occupational Hazards; head positioning and the shoulder girdle.

Common Occurances;  supporting common back problems in yoga practice.

Leave with a solid understanding of how your spine works, and how to ensure both your own and others backs are always benefitting from their yoga.

Relative Measures. The Elements Within Yin

Relative Measures. The Elements Within Yin

  • The YogaTherapies Studio (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The practice of Yin Yoga evolved through the works of leading practitioners such as Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers who infused their knowledge of anatomy and western psychology into the wisdom of traditional chinese and traditional yoga practices.

In this weekend immersion we look at the structures of the meridians of traditional chinese medicine and they relate to the organs, emotions, the 5 elements and their cycles, the principles of Yin & Yang and movement of Chi all alongside the broader models of the physical and subtle body in yoga practice.

We explore the various effects and benefits that can be experienced when there are blockages in particular meridians and how to sequence your practice in a way that considers the deeper dimensions of yoga practice and offers the possibility of transforming both physical and mental health.

Each day we will explore several practices to embody and experience the theory presented.

Creatively Conscious - Goal Setting & Journal Making Workshop.

Join Visual Artist Yvette Hawkins and Creative Self-Development Mentor Claire Newton for an afternoon workshop to ignite and add purpose to your Spring Time season.

Using traditional book making techniques, Yvette will guide you through how to make a series of seasonal journals with beautiful paper based material.    Learn a book binding technique you can use again and again to make beautiful notebooks for gifts for you or your loved ones.

Claire will then lead a workshop and ceremony on how to frame and implement your goals and aspirations for the Spring season ahead focussed specifically on creativity, productivity and wellbeing.

In your new white space you’ve created you can put pen to paper and sketch out the story of your conscious goals for Spring 2019 and beyond.

Whether it’s starting a new hobby, picking up an old one, self-care activities, space to journal each day, carving out time for a regular meditation practise, daily rituals – you can decide what your journal will become and bring it to life as the flowers start to bloom for Spring.

£45; includes tea and cookies, all materials to make journals and a gift box and a set of self-development worksheets.

Yvette studied textiles at Glasgow School of Art and Fine Art at Newcastle University and has worked as a freelance artist and project manager since 2008.

New Classes... and New Teachers!

Align & Flow, Sundays 6.30 - 7.30 pm at the Mala, Gosforth

Guided Meditation, Sundays 7.45 - 8.25pm at the Mala, Gosforth.

We are delighted to introduce a new teacher to our Yoga therapies team, Jordan Middlemist.

Jordan was in the British Parachute Regiment for 6 years, travelling all over the world before deciding to train in Rishikesh as a yoga teacher. With personal insight into the effects of anxiety and depression Jordan is now in a perfect place to share his experience of how yoga and meditation practice has helped him and can help others too.

Jordan is also a keen runner, competing for Wallsend Harriers, and has found that his yoga practice complements his running by creating a strong body, clear mind and focus.

Jordan’s yoga classes are aimed at helping the body recover after vigorous exercise during his asana classes and clear the mind in his meditation classes. These classes will be ideal for those who have busy lives during the week and need to stretch and relax in time for the week ahead.

The Breathing Body
Feb
23
to Feb 24

The Breathing Body

  • The YogaTherapies Studio (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Explore practices of breath rehabilitation, alongside somatic meditation and deepening pranayama practice.

This 10 hour deep dive can be taken as standalone CPD, or as contribution towards the 100hr Yoga Therapeutics advanced training.

Over two days of immersive practice and theory we will explore;

  • the anatomy and physiology of breath;

  • interaction of breathing and spinal mechanics;

  • the subtle breath; vayu & nadi;

  • the 5 layers of self;

  • practices for rehabilitating the breath;

  • practices for deepening pranayama;

  • breath led and somatic meditations;

  • mudra practice for restoration and integration of the energy body.

The importance of breathing need hardly be stressed. It provides the oxygen for the metabolic processes; literally it supports the fires of life. But breath as “pneuma” is also the spirit or soul. We live in an ocean of air like fish in a body of water. By our breathing we are attuned to our atmosphere. If we inhibit our breathing we isolate ourselves from the medium in which we exist. In all Oriental and mystic philosophies, the breath holds the secret to the highest bliss. That is why breathing is the dominant factor in the practice of Yoga.”

Meditation with Sherab Starts at the Den.
Feb
5
1:10 PM13:10

Meditation with Sherab Starts at the Den.

Lunchtime meditations are our opportunity to rest and reflect, to take time out and reset.

The meditations are guided by a Kadampa Buddhist monk who has been practising Buddhist meditation for 20 years and who has dedicated his life to teach the people of the North East at Compassion Kadampa Buddhist Centre in South Gosforth.

Modern Buddhism is the practice of integrating wisdom and mediation into our busy lives in this modern world. The recognition that our happiness depends upon our mind and not on our external conditions liberates us from daily suffering and frustration.

Everybody is welcome.

Anyone can learn to train their mind and there is no need to be physically fit to do this.

Sessions are run simply, with meditations performed either sat in a chair or on a floor cushion for the half hour session.

The Compassion Centre is run on donations. These sessions require no booking and a suggested donation of £3 is requested by the Compassion Centre for this class - £1 of this donation will go towards covering the costs associated with using the Den.

New Year Yoga Mala, Deha Shuddhi & Fire Ceremony

Yoga Mala (the practice of 108 sun salutations) is traditionally undertaken at times of progression, and of change.

This New Year event has become a very special day in the calendar for us at YT, and we are looking forward to its continuing evolution and sharing this powerful experience with you again.

Each salutation represents one of the 108 stages on the journey of the evolution of the human soul, and as such represent both the journey we have already taken, and the new adventure waiting for us in the new year.

The day will begin with a guided meditation process, celebrating the past year, but also working with the elements we are ready to leave behind, and the new energies we all looking to manifest in the coming year before moving into the Mala itself, and the physical experience of redesigning our energy.  To close the practice we will have an indoor fire Ceremony, to commit our intentions and our wishes to the universe.
