Anahata: Infinite Practice

  • YogaTherapies

You are an ever evolving human being. Change is something to embrace, rather than fear; for without change, nothing in this world would ever grow or blossom and no one in this world would ever move forward to become the person they are intended to be.

In this three day series we consider what it means to advance our practice, and how our practice must evolve with us as we move through the stages of our lives using a sequence of heart opening posture and meditation.

An Introduction to Hanna Somatics. With David Fleming & Amanda Franklin

  • YogaTherapies

Hanna Somatic Education, also known as Hanna Somatics, is a rapidly effective form of neuromuscular (mind-body) movement re-education that goes directly to the root cause of most chronic muscular pain and muscular restriction: the brain and the way in which it senses and organises the muscles and movement.

Our bodies regularly respond to stress with natural (automatic) reflex patterns. If we get stuck in these patterns our bodies can develop pain and dysfunction (Sensory Motor Amnesia - SMA). With Hanna Somatics you use your brain to "reprogram" your muscles so they can relax to their natural resting length (using a process we call - pandiculation). As you reduce the sensory-motor amnesia in the system, your brain also regains better sensation and control of your muscles, so you can move with more ease and grace, fluidly, and ultimately pain free.

Throughout the day you will be introduced to the original 8 movement patterns presented by Thomas Hanna in his book Somatics - Reawakening the Mind's Control of Movement, Flexibility & Health. These have become more commonly known as the Myth of Ageing series. If practised over time these movements have the potential to give you the ability to sense for yourself if there is an area of tightness and to deal with it before it leads to pain and further restriction. This is an empowering process giving you the knowledge to maintain your own physical wellbeing on a neuromuscular level. In this workshop, you will be invited to develop a new awareness and therefore a new ability for understanding and controlling your own living body.

Learn how to:
- release the muscles of the back of your body
- release the muscles of the front of your body
- release and lengthen your waist muscles
- increase the mobility involved rotating your torso
- increase the mobility of your hip muscles
- reduce neck and shoulder muscle tension
- expand your breathing
- then, finally, put it all together for freer walking

The only requirement for attending the workshop is the ability to get down & up from the ground and to be able to lie on your front, back and sides for a short period of time.

Click on the link below for a snapshot of what the workshop will entail:

David Fleming is a Hanna Somatic Movement Educator. His Somatics journey began in 2008 when he trained in Nia and later Nia 5 Stages (developmental movement). Today he is one of only a few Nia Black Belts in the UK. David is also an Aerial Yoga teacher and has co-delivered Aerial Yoga Teacher Training programmes in the UK and India. He began his Hanna Somatics work in 2013 when he hosted the first Somatic Exercise Coach training in the UK. He has since hosted Martha Peterson, of Essential Somatics, many times and has assisted on numerous Essential Somatics trainings. In February 2015, he began Clinical Somatic Educator training with Martha. More recently he has trained with James Knight – Gentle Somatic Yoga, and together with Amanda Franklin is in the process of developing a somatic based Aerial Yoga training.

Amanda Franklin began her teaching career in secondary schools in Yorkshire. After 8 years as an English teacher, and re-training in Nia (somatic movement), she , alongside David Fleming, set up a social enterprise sharing Nia in the community. After 8 years of this work, she is now a Nia Black Belt teacher, an Aerial Yoga teacher and trainer, and a Somatic Exercise Coach & Gentle Somatic Yoga teacher. Amanda co-teaches and co-trains with David locally Leeds around the UK as well as abroad in India.

Delve Deep, Explore and Release.

  • YogaTherapies Ltd

There are over 20 muscles that cross the hip so you could say that almost every pose is a hip opener but come along to this workshop to delve deep across the whole spectrum of hip opening asana's.

You hear so much about opening your hips in yoga - but why?

To put it very simply, tight hips affect our range of motion. This can mean even simple tasks become more difficult. We are going to work on improving the range of motion in the hips which over time can improve circulation and problems such as back pain.

Yoga tradition holds the hips as a storage ground for negative felling and pent up emotions especially ones related to control in our lives. Come along and create space for the birth of new ideas and new pathway. Opening the hips gives us access to freedom in the body and in our own unique expression - creatively, physically, sexually and spirtually.

Thai Yoga Massage Lvl 1.

  • YogaTherapies

The Beginners Diploma level 1&2 is the foundation of Thai Yoga Massage. It is the starting point for all therapists and provides an internationally recognised qualification on successful completion. The course is 10/11 workshops in duration and will teach you.

  • How to give full body Thai Yoga Massage in a variety of ways including Supine, Prone, Side and Sitting Positions
  • How to apply Yoga stretches, Acupressure and Compression techniques with your Thumbs, Hands, Forearms, Elbows, Knees and Feet.
  • How to work confidently with the 10 Sen lines of Thai Yoga Massage
  • Understanding of the History, Yoga Philosophy and Practice of Thai Yoga Massage

The next course I am teaching is with Yoga teacher Chris Jackson in Newcastle, England at his studio Yoga Therapies starting in July 2017. I feel that we have successfully brought together two complementray systems in this new diploma to improve the general foundation course of Thai Yoga Massage and the way it is commonly taught.

Chris presently teaches a 200hr Yoga Teacher Training diploma at his studio and is well known throughout the Uk for his compassion and skill. Having worked with Chris previously I was encouraged to approach him with this new format for teaching this Beginners level 1&2 diploma and the following level 3 Advanced Therapeutic Diploma.

Very few schools can offer the addition of an Accredited Advanced Diploma to its Beginners Diploma and not only have we achieved this, but we now also provide students with the opportunity to join the level 3 Advanced Diploma 7 weeks after completing the Beginners level 1&2 Diploma. This gives those students who are really interested in the art of Thai Yoga Massage a chance to practice and develop between both couress and also to go one step further and become an Advanced practitioner.

The Advanced course with Chris is Advanced Therapeutics level 3 and the Advanced course I teach on my own is Advanced Dynamic level 3. The main difference being that I teach a Yoga and Thai Massage programme that concentrates on Dynamic massage and we begin to enter into body psychotherapy working with trauma. The course with Chris in Newcastle is longer and goes deeper into Anatomy and the specific practices of Yoga Asana and Pranayama.

The Beginners course and Advanced courses I teach with Chris begin with a 2hr Yoga class with an intention of really teaching the Principles, Practices and Anatomy of Yoga relevant to the 4/5hr workshop in Thai Yoga Massage that follows it. We used this combination last year in teaching the Therapeutic diploma and it worked so well we decided to include it in the level 1&2 course also

The morning Yoga class helps students to either start or further develop their own Yoga practice with a deeper understanding and the Functional Anatomy element is a very creative aproach of helping them to strengthen, explore and understand their bodies in a way that really supports the Thai Yoga Massage. A very good practitioner will also have a regular Yoga, Qi Gong or Tai Chi practice and we provide that vehicle for self motivated therapists at a high yet accessible standard.

The Diploma has been split into two modules and people are welcome to do just one of them but the accredited qualification can only be awarded to those who complete both modules. They start on:

Level 1 – Supine Position – July 3rd-7th                                                                                             Level 2 – Side, Prone, Sitting – August 1st-5th

The Diploma is open to everyone but most suited to those who have an interest in Yoga and Massage. It is possible to miss workshops due to prior arrangements or illness but they will need to be caught up with me or Chris in a one to one session to obtain qualification.

Additional benefits to the Level 1 & 2 Diploma course

  • You will have 2 Yoga teachers who are very highly trained in their chosen fields
  • The Diploma provides online video for the workshop sequences, to assist learning and practice between sessions
  • Completing this level 1&2 Diploma allows immediate progression to the more Advanced diplomas
  • High quality Thai Yoga mats are provided for practice
  • This qualification is accredited by the leading UK insurance company FHT, and is also insurable in most European countries (but please check with your own insurance company)
  • We teach morning Yoga and Meditation as a path to peace and greater self awareness and connection

Daily Format ;

9.00-11.00 yoga & anatomy.

11.00 - 11.45 - sequence demo.

1.15 - 5 - practicals, technique & anatomy.

Thai Yoga Massage Level 3.a

  • YogaTherapies

I am excited to announce that myself and Chris Jackson are collaborating to create and teach this new Advanced Diploma of 8 days duration at the Yoga Therapies studio in Newcastle. This new FHT accredited Diploma is split into 2 modules.

Part 1: covers Body Assesment and Correction and then develops into Dynamic Thai massage for the lower body. The dates for part 1 are Sept 25th / 28th

Part 2: covers Abdominal massage and Dynamic Thai massage for the Upper body on Nov 27th / 30th. Although people are welcome to join only one of the two modules the accredited qualification can only be awarded to those who complete both parts 1 and 2.

The Advanced Therapeutic Diploma is a fusion of Osteopathy and Dynamic Thai Yoga Massage, acting as a bridge between the Old and New, between the East and West, where the best parts of 2 great Holistic systems are brought together to create something very unique and possibly even more effective. In this course the meditative, intuitive and feeling based approach of traditional Thai Yoga massage is merged with the more precise anatomical approach of Osteopathic practice. The goal here is to produce the best framework possible at this moment in time to guide self-motivated therapists to their highest capacity as conscious, compassionate and skillful body workers

What you will learn

  • 5 Thai Yoga Massage sequences
  • Simple Muscle Testing techniques

The approach here will be to help each student come to a greater understanding of their body through a direct and guided experience in Yoga Asana, with an intention to enable them to transfer this knowledge into their own yoga, massage and teaching practices.

Dynamic Thai Yoga Massage: This part of the programme combines the art of Thai Yoga Massage with Dynamic Osteopathic techniques. The physical goal of this approach is to improve joint mobility, restore vitality and correcting imbalances in the bodies muscular/skeletal systems and myo-fascial trains. Svadhistana: The Fluid Core

  • YogaTherapies

We understand our body through the different tensions that run through it. Each breath is filled with the sensations of expansion and contraction, movement and aliveness. As we breath in we sense our restrictions, and our meeting point with the world, then we sense into ourselves with each exhale. In many ways this pulsing expansion is the most primal expression of ourselves, and the first way we understand the world around us.

When we lose this ability to move from our core, we begin to harden with our habits, and our habitual thought patterns. We sense 'stuck' and 'stagnant' energy, and sometimes a building of charge, just desperate to be released yet we don't know how.

This weekend we will explore what it means to operate fluidly around our own axis. We will invoke the watery creativity of our second chakra and utilise both strong, vinyasa styled practice, and soft, introspective yin practice to shed some of the preconceptions that yoga places upon us, and that our history has built up in our bodies. So that we can learn more deeply what it means to be open, and secure.

The End & Beyond: Hypermobility & Integrity in Asana Practice

The End & Beyond: Hypermobility & Integrity in Asana Practice

  • YogaTherapies

There is an underlying assumption that Yoga as a therapeutic form of exercise is inherently safe. Of course when practiced correctly it is, yet when its foundational principles (both physical and cognitive) are left unarticulated practitioners risk moving beyond the tensional integrity of their systems and can quickly expose themselves to potentially damaging practices.

Hypermobility is over-represented within the Yoga community, and can often leave practitioners without the understanding of asana required to work with integrity within their bodies, especially when our over productive approach to life allows the “go hard or go home” mentality to creep onto the mat. Equally at risk are those individuals who are might consider themselves too ‘tight’ and compromise their bodies to manoeuvre around the aesthetic demands of the posture. Correct practice of yoga extends to include a mindset, and a way of approaching our bodies that are perhaps not in line with the way we are required to live our lives on a day to day basis. When practiced in a way that honours the core of each individual we are left with a template for practice that will invigorate, strengthen, and stabilise the body and mind.

The more intelligently we operate, the more the barriers to our practice such as hypermobility, tension and injury begin to fall away.

Tom Myers describes fascia as the ‘organ of form’ and his work details its extensive role in the development of our physical body, and also its interweaving role within our neurology that allows for the expression of deeper and more subtle levels of being.

Over the weekend we will consider how fascia organises our form, what happens when it becomes disorganised and the protective role that our sensitivity to sensation plays in our practice. We will discuss aspects of hypermobility such as impaired proprioception (ability to sense the arrangement of our joints in space) and how they can be supported by asana practice.

We will begin by looking at the form of the feet and hands as the originating point of our moments through their direct interaction with the earth, and our ability to ground each posture. We will discuss the myofascial spiral lines as well as their appendicular extensions and their role in stabilising the major joints of the body. And we will conclude with a practice that will steep the body in longevity.

Each session will be a mixture of dynamic, vinyasa styled practice and also deeply restorative yin yoga postures, selected for the unique way in which they work with and integrate the fascial system.

The Core: An Expanded Concept

Saturday, Exploring Neutrality. Sunday, Exploring Polarity. 9-12

"The quality of our responses relies on the quality of our sensations. The intelligence of an organism is determined by its sensitivity, which, in our case, may be impeded by our state of mind and physical condition." - John Stirk

So often we are encouraged to live life up against our hard edge... to remove the space and the doubt that surrounds us.

In our practice this can manifest as a need to always push into a stronger and stronger stretch, or activate more musculature. But what would it mean to rest right in the middle? To trust that our deepest core and all of its projections know exactly what to do, and exactly what we need.

This two part weekend explores the boundless organic energy we access when we learn how to trust our deep core, and let ourselves move from that place in the poses, free from the exhaustion of layering our expectations, our desires and our egos over the practice.

We will consider in detail what it means to work from a neutral alignment, and how the movements of the spine and the myofascial lines foster unity in our bodies. We will consider how using our deep core musculature relates to, and creates both physical and emotional stability. Sequences will also delve into the mechanisms of pranayama, and the movement of prana that can aid balance in the nervous system, so that we can fully settle into our centre, and the bliss that resides there.

Drop in price £20, discounts apply for YogaTherapies membership holders.

Karma Unravelling: Yomala Morning Intensives

  • YogaTherapies Ltd

Through life we accumulate Granthis, or 'energetic knots', of which there are three primary knots that lie along our central channel and block our innate energy. As we build tapas (fire) in our practice, we also build the ability to unravel both our physical and emotional tension and transform ourselves at the deepest of levels.

The first knot, brahma granthi is tied by our survival instincts, and the instinctual patterns of our personality. Vishnu granthi sits higher around the solar plexus and heart and is tied by the sustenance of our physical, emotional and mental lives. Rudra granthi sits at the throat and third eye, and is tied by the ego and its desires to remain intact and separate.

Once untied, we are able to connect to the deepest of our energies, and to universal energy, in a way that is no longer pulled back and drained by the trappings of Maya (the material world).

Join us for three mornings of intensive practice combining mantra, mudra, pranayama, asana and chöd meditation.

All sessions are available to book HERE . Places are limited so booking is advised to avoid missing out.

Gateway To Self Practice

  • YogaTherapies Ltd

Starting a self practice is something many Yogi's aspire to, but often find the prospect of beginning incredibly daunting! With such an array of postures and pranayama to choose from picking a starting point can be enough of a challenge to put you off all together!

We have put  together this special session dedicated to helping you find your muse, such that the prospect of rolling out your mat for sadhana (dedicated self practice) becomes exciting, compelling and full of possibility!

The morning will follow a simple format, we'll start with a 90minute practice, where we will discuss some of the essential elements of a balanced pranayama (breath) and asana (posture) practice. After savasana we'll have a short break so you can all grab your notebooks, before we have an hour discussion about how to break down the daunting process of starting a self practice into easy and achievable steps! We'll also be sharing with you some brand new and exciting resources you can take away to help you on your journey.

Drop in price for this class is £10, or use your class passes. Feel free to join us for the 90 minute asana practice even if you can't stay all morning.

Our natural tendency in the face of difficulty or challenge is to turn away, to avoid the things that scare us.  However, most of what scares comes from within.  Old fears, negative and unhelpful beliefs, outdated habits of mind. Faulty wiring, electrochemical pathways that keep firing in the same old ways generating the same old thoughts, beliefs and behaviours.

When we learn how to face fear with skill and kindness we can begin to cultivate a warriors heart and rewire our system. We can even come to enjoy facing and transforming our fears living free from the prisons of our mind’s own making.

Yoga Mala (the practice of 108 sun salutations) is traditionally undertaken at times of progression, and of change. This New Year event has become a very special day in the calendar for us at YT, and we are looking forward to its continuing evolution and sharing this powerful experience with you again.

Join us from 12 noon, on Friday the 30th December. The day will begin with a guided meditation process, celebrating the past year, but also working with the elements we are ready to leave behind, and the new energies we all looking to manifest in the coming year before moving into the Mala itself, and the physical experience of redesigning our energy.

Surrender and Receive: Yoga and Aromatherapy doTerra Workshop

  • YogaTherapies

10-11.15 Surrender and Receive: Forrest Yoga with Aromatherapy

One must first release to receive and make space for the new. As autumn leaves fall, so must we leave behind what no longer serves us and make space to receive the silence and wisdom of the colder months. This workshop helps to increase energy and calm the mind through accessible and healing backbends, releasing tension from our shoulders and upper back so we can open our hearts to deeper listening. The oils used in the workshop will assist with emotional healing, releasing stagnant energy, feelings or blockages.

11.30-12.30 Essential Oils and Emotions

In this class we will look deeper at how oils work to support our emotional wellbeing. We will cover the science behind it and the importance of quality of oils to really make an impact. We will share our love of doTerra and explain how the company sources their oils and how to use them in your yoga practice and your life.

Price: £30
